Sagamu Electricity Crisis: IBEDC Pledges Improvement as Youths Issue 48-Hour Ultimatum

Residents of Sagamu Local Government have expressed growing frustration over the persistent poor electricity supply in the area, prompting the Sagamu Youth Association (SYA) to issue a 48-hour ultimatum to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).

The youth group, led by Comrade Olugbenga Isiaka Lawal (Ambassador Easy), warned that failure to address the power crisis would lead to mass protests and other actions.

In response, Sagamu Area Commander ACP Alabi S. Akinjide (PSC) convened an emergency meeting between IBEDC’s Sagamu Branch management and the leadership of SYA to find immediate and long-term solutions to the issue.

During the meeting, IBEDC’s Sagamu Business Manager, Femi Akinkurolere, acknowledged the residents’ grievances and admitted that the power situation had been unstable. He attributed the problem to an outdated transmission line from Ayede, adding that the Federal Government was already working on upgrading the infrastructure.

However, the Sagamu Youth Association was not convinced by IBEDC’s explanations, noting that similar promises had been made in the past without significant improvement. The group criticized the company for excessive billing despite poor service and a lack of transparency in communicating load-shedding schedules. They also highlighted the economic toll of unreliable electricity on businesses and residents.

ACP Akinjide urged IBEDC to take immediate steps to stabilize electricity supply and improve communication with the community to prevent further unrest. While IBEDC did not provide a definite timeline for improvement, they assured residents of a more reasonable power supply moving forward and pledged to engage more with community representatives.
