Security Crackdown in Abuja as Police Disperse Protesters Demanding Nnamdi Kanu’s Release
Police dispersed protesters demanding the release of detained Indigenous People of Biafra leader Nnamdi Kanu on Monday in Abuja. The demonstrators initially fled after police used tear gas near Maitama but later regrouped at Utako to continue their protest. Security forces swiftly moved in again, dispersing the crowd.
The protesters, comprising civil rights activists and pro-democracy groups, were part of the #ReleaseNnamdiKanuNow campaign, urging the Federal Government to honor the 2022 Court of Appeal ruling that discharged and acquitted Kanu.
Earlier, police fired multiple rounds of tear gas near Transcorp Hilton and surrounding streets in Maitama, causing panic among commuters, traders, and passersby. After reorganizing at Utako, the protesters resumed chanting and displaying banners before security personnel used tear gas once more.
In response, security measures across Abuja have been intensified, with soldiers, police, and Department of State Services operatives deployed at key locations including Eagle Square, the Federal Secretariat, and the Three Arms Zone. At Berger roundabout, a large contingent of soldiers was observed, with a gun truck stationed at the area.
