Senate Denies Claims of New States, Holds Tribute for Buhari

Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday dismissed rumours circulating on social media that the National Assembly has approved the creation of new states.

Addressing the matter during plenary in response to concerns raised by Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP, Bauchi Central), Akpabio clarified that while the Constitution Review Committee has received over 42 proposals for the creation of new states, none have completed the required legislative process.

“I have seen over 42 proposals, but not a single one has undergone full deliberation. The process of creating a state is thorough and has not been concluded in any case,” he stated.

He cautioned communities against holding meetings or mobilising support for unapproved states, emphasising that the Senate has not sanctioned the creation of any new state.

Akpabio urged Nigerians to depend solely on official communications from the National Assembly regarding constitutional amendments and related matters.

Meanwhile, the Senate has set aside a special session for Wednesday to pay tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari. During the session, lawmakers will reflect on his contributions to the nation’s development.
