Student-teacher Arrested After Pupil Loses Eye in Classroom Accident

A student-teacher has been arrested in Ogun State for allegedly causing an 11-year-old pupil to lose her right eye in a classroom accident. The incident occurred at Owiwi Nursery and Primary School in Obada Oko area of the state.

According to the police, the teacher, Adeola Adeyemo, was holding a cane in the classroom when the primary six pupil, Alao Idera, rushed toward her and the cane accidentally pierced her right eye. The police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident and stated that the victim’s wounded eye was surgically removed after being sent to the Federal Medical Centre in Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, for treatment.

Odutola clarified that the teacher did not intentionally harm the student, but rather, it was an accident. “It was simply a situation where the teacher, preparing for an end-of-year party, was holding a cane, as teachers often do,” Odutola explained. “However, when the student rushed toward her, the cane accidentally caused injury to the student’s eye.”

The police spokesperson also revealed that after realizing the severity of the injury, the teacher attempted suicide but was quickly rushed to the hospital where she is currently stable. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of pupils in schools and the need for teachers to be more mindful of their actions in the classroom.

The Ogun State police command has assured that the teacher will be thoroughly investigated and charged accordingly. The incident has also sparked a debate about the use of corporal punishment in schools and the need for alternative methods of discipline.
