Missing out would be a significant setback for a nation with a storied football legacy, especially as the 2026 tournament is set to be the biggest ever — co-hosted by Mexico, Canada, and the United States, and expanded to include 38 teams.
The immediate focus for Nigeria is the CAF playoffs. The Super Eagles are set to face Gabon today in Morocco, while Cameroon will compete against DR Congo in the other semi-final. The winners from these matches will meet in a single-leg final for Africa’s sole qualification spot to the intercontinental playoffs in Mexico next year.
Many Nigerians initially doubted the team’s chances of making it this far, given their inconsistent performance during the group stage. However, a late rally in energy and purpose helped Nigeria leapfrog the Republic of Benin into second place in Group C on the final day, reigniting hope among fans.
Now, there is a renewed sense of confidence among Nigerian football supporters. Many believe the Super Eagles can achieve their goal if they perform at their best. Sylvanus Okpala, a former assistant coach of the national team, reflected on the skepticism surrounding Nigeria’s chances. “People ask why Nigeria, a giant in African football, can’t secure the World Cup ticket outright from the group stage. But that’s football. The game has evolved tremendously. Today, many players compete in top leagues worldwide. For example, Senegal recently beat England 3-1 in England. Can we compare Senegal’s level to England’s? It doesn’t mean that those who qualify automatically will do better in the World Cup than those who go through the playoffs.”
He added, “Nigeria’s chances are just as bright as any other country’s in the playoffs.”
