This follows the announcement made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu regarding the pay increase, which initially brought joy and relief to corps members across the country. However, the excitement was tempered by delays in implementing the new allowance.
For nearly six months after the announcement in September 2024, serving corps members continued to receive the previous allowance of N33,000 that was established in 2020 under former President Muhammadu Buhari.
A corps member in Kwara State, who identified himself as Adepoju, confirmed the commencement of the N77,000 allowance to Tribune Online, calling the increase “long overdue.” He noted that the payments might be disbursed in batches; while some corps members have received the new amount, others are still waiting.
Meanwhile, reactions have started flooding social media, following the Minister of Youths’ assurance that the federal government would also settle any backlog related to the N77,000 allowance.
