Three Men Charged with Assault on Ogun State Doctor
In Abeokuta, three men appeared before a Chief Magistrate Court on Monday for allegedly assaulting a medical doctor at the Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital Aro. The defendants, James Akode, Lekan Ajeigbe, and Rilwan Roheem, were charged with conspiracy, assault, and property damage. They pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Matthew Famuyiwa, the prosecution counsel, explained that the incident occurred on May 17. He detailed how the defendants allegedly conspired to assault Dr. Alexander Onochie during his duty. “Dr. Onochie was attending to an emergency patient when Akode entered his office, requesting immediate attention for a sick sibling he brought in,” Famuyiwa stated. “The doctor asked for patience as he was dealing with another emergency, but when he called for the next patient, no one responded. Upon stepping outside, Dr. Onochie found the waiting room empty and the trio outside, who then assaulted him.”
Famuyiwa also accused the defendants of damaging Dr. Onochie’s Toyota Camry, including the side mirror valued at N20,000 and the bumper. The defendants’ actions disrupted the hospital’s environment, causing a breach of peace. These offences violate Sections 516, 351, 451, and 249 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
Magistrate Mrs. D.O Kolawole Ogunbowale granted the defendants bail, setting the amount at N200,000 each, with two sureties in the same sum. The sureties must be registered bondsmen with the Ogun State Judiciary. The court adjourned the case until June 4 for further proceedings.
