Three-Storey Building Collapses in Yaba, Four People Rescued
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that a three-storey building under construction collapsed on Friday night, September 12, 2025, at 333 Borno Street, Alagomeji, Yaba, Lagos State.
In a statement shared on its X handle on Saturday, NEMA reported that the incident occurred around 8:30 p.m., leaving several individuals trapped beneath the debris.
“Eyewitness reports differ, with some claiming six people were trapped while others put the number at five. So far, emergency teams have rescued four adult males alive and taken them to the hospital for treatment.
“Personnel from NEMA, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and other responders promptly arrived at the scene to begin search and rescue operations,” the agency stated.
NEMA noted that the exact number of people still trapped remains unconfirmed, but efforts are ongoing to locate and evacuate survivors.
Emergency officials have cordoned off the site to ensure safety and smooth rescue operations.
“The search and rescue operation is continuing into the night, with responders assuring that no effort will be spared to save lives,” it added.
Sadly, building collapses remain a recurring tragedy in Lagos and other Nigerian cities, largely attributed to poor construction standards, the use of substandard materials, and weak regulatory oversight.
Reports from the Lagos State government and civil society organizations indicate that dozens of these incidents are recorded each year, leading to loss of lives, injuries, and displacement of residents.
Authorities in Lagos have, however, consistently cautioned developers against unsafe practices, with several buildings previously sealed for failing to comply with safety regulations.
