Tinubu Meets Sultan of Sokoto, Ooni of Ife, Others, Ahead of August 1 Protests

President Bola Tinubu held a crucial meeting with prominent traditional rulers, including the Sultan of Sokoto and the Ooni of Ife, to address pressing national concerns and the upcoming August 1 protests.

The gathering at the State House aimed to reassure citizens of the administration’s dedication to their needs and the economy’s gradual recovery. “Yes, it is true that I asked for this job, and I approached some of you to support me. So, I have no excuse not to do the job with sincerity of purpose and honesty,” Tinubu stated.

The president acknowledged the daunting challenges inherited from his predecessor, emphasizing his commitment to moving Nigeria forward. Tinubu highlighted several key initiatives, including the student loan program, consumer credit scheme, and fiscal autonomy for local government councils, demonstrating his administration’s proactive approach.

The president stressed the importance of economic viability in infrastructure projects, citing the Lagos-Calabar coastal road initiative as a potential game-changer for power generation, irrigation expansion, and farming opportunities. He also underscored the need for vigilance in maintaining security improvements, warning against complacency. “Security is getting better, but we cannot take our eyes off the camera because it takes one accident for things to flare up. We are managing it,” he said.

Tinubu expressed gratitude to the traditional rulers for their role in communicating with citizens and emphasized the importance of peaceful protests. He reiterated his administration’s focus on supporting students, expanding consumer credit, and recalibrating oil usage to rejuvenate the economy.
