Tinubu Orders Nationwide Deployment of 100,000 CNG Conversion Kits to Ease Fuel Burden
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the immediate rollout of 100,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion kits across Nigeria to help reduce the impact of rising fuel prices on motorists and commuters.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by Ismaeel Ahmed, Executive Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG), following a meeting with the President at the State House in Abuja.
The move comes in response to the global surge in petroleum prices, driven by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, which have pushed petrol costs in Nigeria above ₦1,000 per litre in many areas.
The conversion kits will enable vehicle owners—including commercial drivers and tricycle operators—to modify their engines to run on CNG, a cheaper and cleaner alternative to petrol and diesel. Deployment is expected to start within two to three weeks, with conversion centres nationwide preparing for increased demand.
President Tinubu also instructed Pi-CNG to accelerate the development of supporting infrastructure, including CNG refuelling stations and electric vehicle charging points, to improve access to alternative mobility solutions.
Currently, about 77 CNG refilling stations are at various stages of development nationwide, with plans to establish additional refuelling points along major transport corridors, including Lokoja, Abuja, Kaduna, Zaria, Kano, and Maiduguri.
The initiative also seeks collaboration with local and international manufacturers to support vehicle conversion and assembly of CNG-powered and electric vehicles, which could create jobs and strengthen Nigeria’s automotive industry.
