Tragic Road Accident in Gombe Claims Lives of Over 20 Worshippers on Easter Monday
A devastating road accident on Easter Monday in Billiri, Gombe State, has claimed the lives of at least 20 individuals, predominantly children and youths. The tragic event unfolded around 8:00 am as Christian worshippers were descending from a mountain where they had gathered for a symbolic commemoration of Jesus Christ’s meeting in Galilee, a day following His resurrection.
Eyewitness reports indicate that a truck loaded with grains, en route to Gombe, collided with the worshippers, resulting in numerous fatalities and injuries. Many victims have been taken to local medical facilities in Billiri, receiving treatment for their various injuries.
In the aftermath of the incident, frustrated youths responded by setting the truck on fire and storming the Divisional Police Headquarters, demanding the release of the truck driver, who is believed to have been detained.
Authorities swiftly dispatched a combined team of police, military, and other security personnel to the scene to manage the unrest and avert further escalation. The Gombe State Command of the Nigeria Police and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) have confirmed the accident’s occurrence but have withheld further details, indicating that an official statement will be issued shortly.
