Travellers Abducted, One Fatality Reported in Sagamu-Benin Expressway Ambush

Reports from the Ogun State Police Command, as disclosed by SP Omolola Odutola, the State Police Public Relations Officer, have confirmed a distressing incident along the Ilisan/Iperu axis of the Sagamu-Benin Expressway.

According to Dailypost, travellers were abducted, and one person was tragically killed in the harrowing event that unfolded on Friday, May 3, around 6:55 pm. Though the exact count of abducted individuals remains uncertain, it is reported that a group of approximately seven armed assailants, brandishing AK-47 rifles, brazenly obstructed the expressway, instigating chaos and terror.

Upon swift intervention by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ilisan, the aftermath revealed two vehicles ravaged by bullets. Among the vehicles was a Lexus jeep 300, registered as LND 640 DY, belonging to Chilaka Lugard, and another Lexus jeep 350 with registration number LSR 996 JF, registered under Kingsley Chineme.

The discovery within the Lexus 350 vehicle was disheartening—a cross bag containing N113,000, two iPhones (an iPhone 6 and an iPhone 11 Promax), and the lifeless body of an unidentified male, fatally wounded by a gunshot to the head. Additionally, a third vehicle, laden with plantains, was found at the scene. Remarkably, the driver, initially abducted, was later released along with the vehicle.

In response to this egregious act, Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alamutu, swiftly convened an emergency meeting on Monday, instructing tactical commanders and the mobile squadron to deploy all necessary resources in pursuit of the assailants. Alamutu personally inspected the scene, reiterating the police force’s unwavering commitment to swiftly apprehending the perpetrators and ensuring justice for the victims.

As investigations unfold, the Ogun State Police Command urges members of the public to remain vigilant and provide any pertinent information that may assist in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
