Nigerian Army troops have launched a successful operation against the enclave of notorious terrorist leader Sanusi Dutsin-Ma in the Pauwa highlands of Kankara Local Government Area, Katsina State.
During the raid on Tuesday, the forces neutralized three terrorists and rescued 84 captives, including 54 children, alongside 30 adults—consisting of 23 females and 7 males. This information was released in a statement by Dr. Nasiru Mua’zu, the State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, on Thursday.
Mua’zu detailed the operation, which was carried out by troops from the 17 Brigade with the support of the Air Component of Operation Forest Sanity. He stated, “On March 18, 2025, around 9:00 AM, our security forces initiated a strategic assault on the territory of the notorious terrorist leader Sanusi Dutsin-Ma in the general area of Pauwa highlands, Kankara LGA.”
The operation featured coordinated air strikes on predefined targets while ground troops advanced to engage the terrorists. Contact was made with the insurgents near Malori and Matalawa villages, leading to intense confrontations that drove them further into the hills.
By 3:09 PM, the security forces reached Dutsin-Ma’s camp and engaged in a firefight lasting until around 4:30 PM. The operation resulted in the elimination of three terrorists, with an unverified number fleeing with injuries.
Mua’zu further stated, “As a result of this successful operation, 84 captives were freed, composed of 7 males, 23 females, and 54 children who had been held in terrorist camps. In addition, pairs of camouflage uniforms and other suspicious items were destroyed.”
The rescued individuals received prompt food assistance before being handed over to local government authorities for reunion with their families. Mua’zu emphasized that the rescue operation underscores the state government’s dedication to restoring peace and security, commending the troops for their professionalism, which resulted in no casualties on the government side.
