Two Fatal Accidents Claim Lives in Ogun State
In a tragic incident that has plunged residents of Yewa South Local Government Area into mourning, a Dangote Cement truck crushed five people to death at the Alapoka axis of the Papalanto–Ilaro Road on Friday evening.
Confirming the accident, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the crash occurred around 8:30 p.m. when the truck lost its brakes and rammed into a tricycle carrying five passengers.
He identified the vehicles involved as “an unregistered tricycle and a Dangote truck with the number plate GRZ 767 XA.” Akinbiyi added that the Acting TRACE Head, Adedayo Omonayajo, and the Ilaro Divisional Commander, Salako Idowu, led a rescue team to the scene. However, the officials were nearly attacked by angry residents before operatives of the Amotekun Corps restored calm. The bodies of the deceased were later deposited in a morgue by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
Meanwhile, another accident occurred at midnight along the Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway when a 30,000-litre fuel-laden tanker overturned and spilled its contents, sparking a fire around 1:00 a.m. According to TRACE, the inferno, which was caused by excessive speed and loss of control, destroyed a truck, a tow vehicle, and a PHCN cable supplying power to Mowe and surrounding communities.
Emergency responders from TRACE, FRSC, the Police, and fire services were deployed to the scene to extinguish the flames, manage the fuel decantation process, and restore order. The number of casualties from the tanker fire is yet to be confirmed.
