US and Isreal Face Backlash Over Secret Talks with African Countries
The US and Israel have been secretly negotiating with three East African countries – Sudan, Somalia, and Somaliland to resettle Palestinians from the Gaza Strip as part of President Donald Trump’s postwar plan. This proposal has sparked widespread criticism and raised serious concerns about legality and morality.
The plan involves permanently relocating over 2 million Palestinians from Gaza, with the US taking ownership of the territory, overseeing cleanup, and developing it into a real estate project. Palestinians in Gaza have rejected this proposal, dismissing Israeli claims that the departures would be voluntary. Arab nations have also expressed strong opposition, offering an alternative reconstruction plan that would keep Palestinians in their homes. Human rights groups warn that forcing or pressuring Palestinians to leave could be considered a war crime.
Despite the backlash, the White House maintains that Trump “stands by his vision.” US and Israeli officials have confirmed secret diplomatic efforts to discuss the proposal with Sudan, Somalia, and Somaliland. These efforts began last month, shortly after Trump announced the plan alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Israel is reportedly taking the lead in these discussions, with the US and Israel offering various incentives, including financial, diplomatic, and security benefits, to persuade these countries to participate.
It’s worth noting that Sudan has already rejected the proposal, while officials from Somalia and Somaliland claim they were unaware of any contacts. The proposal’s feasibility and potential consequences remain uncertain, but its controversial nature is undeniable.
