WAFCON 2025: Super Falcons Arrive in Casablanca, Aim for Historic 10th Title
Nigeria’s senior women’s national team, the Super Falcons, have landed in Casablanca, Morocco, as they set their sights on clinching a record-extending 10th title at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The team’s delegation, which includes 22 players and team officials, touched down in Morocco’s economic hub on Wednesday night after departing from Lisbon, Portugal, where they had been in camp. Notably, China-based forward Folashade Ijamilusi and USA-based star striker Asisat Oshoala had already arrived in Casablanca ahead of the rest of the squad.
Before heading to Morocco, the nine-time African champions put on a resilient performance in a friendly match against Portugal’s women’s national team, holding them to a goalless draw at the Estádio José Gomes in Lisbon on Monday evening. The match saw standout displays from goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, young defender Shukurat Oladipo, and experienced forward Francisca Ordega, who all impressed with their contributions on the field.
The Super Falcons will kick off their WAFCON 2025 campaign against Tunisia on Sunday, July 6, at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca. They will then face Botswana and Algeria in the group stage as they look to progress deep into the tournament.
Since the tournament’s inception as the African Women’s Championship in 1998, Nigeria has consistently been a dominant force, never failing to reach the semi-finals. The Super Falcons claimed the championship in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018. They also secured semi-final finishes in 2008, 2012, and the most recent edition in 2022.
With a strong blend of youth and experience, the Nigerian squad is determined to reaffirm its supremacy on the continent and bring home a historic 10th WAFCON title.
