WHO Commends Ekiti State for Exceptional Health Sector Performance
The World Health Organization (WHO) has lauded Ekiti State for its exceptional achievements in the health sector.
Akeem Busari, the WHO’s state coordinator, praised the state government for its dedication to enhancing the health and well-being of its residents. He reported notable progress in the health sector, as reflected in the latest evaluations sent to the global health organization.
Busari made these remarks during a three-day technical workshop focused on a joint annual review of the state health sector, held in Ilupeju-Ekiti and organized by the state government.
In his opening address, Dr. Oyebanji Filani, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, explained that the workshop aims to thoroughly analyze health sector data to gauge performance and pinpoint opportunities for improving the state’s data ecosystem for better healthcare delivery.
Dr. Filani also highlighted additional goals of the workshop, which include reviewing health sector data from various sources and identifying key areas where interventions are needed to ensure continuous improvement.
He expressed gratitude to Ekiti Governor Biodun Oyebanji for approving the recruitment of numerous health professionals, including doctors, nurses, midwives, and Community Health Officers, to address existing shortages.
In their messages of support, Dr. Olasunkanmi Alabi, Permanent Secretary of the Hospital Management Board; Dr. Rasheed Adepoju, Executive Secretary of the State Primary Health Care Development Agency; and Dr. Odilade Adewole, Project Coordinator of the Excellence Community Education Welfare Scheme (ECEWS), commended the Ekiti state government and UNICEF for organizing the workshop, describing it as timely and a significant step forward with lasting benefits.
Dr. Sunday Omoya, Director of Planning, Research and Statistics and lead facilitator, stressed that the review workshop would assess progress towards achieving health goals in Ekiti State and guide policy decisions and resource allocation within the sector.
Various facilitators, program officers, and health development partners presented papers covering topics such as sector-wide approaches, 2024 budget performance, health data sources for state analysis, primary healthcare service delivery and data management, health insurance progress and challenges, and quality of care improvement in Ekiti State, among others.
