Born on the 8th of January 1980, Kemi Adetiba is a perfect example of the popular saying “What a man can do, a woman can do better”. She is an award-winning filmmaker, cinematographer, music and video director whose works have appeared on Channel O, MTV Base, Sound City TV, BET, and Netflix.
Kemi was born in Lagos to Dele and Mayen Adetiba, she holds a bachelor’s degree in law from the University of Lagos. From an early age, Kemi has taken interest in the life of motion and camera. As a child, she was featured in a Television commercial for the detergent brand OMO. As she grew, she started as a professional radio presenter with Rhythm 93.7 FM, where she became the voice behind two nationally syndicated hit shows: Soul’d Out and Sunday at the Seaside.
However, the life of being in front and behind the camera kept calling her, and she made the transition by producing and presenting several shows on Mnet, which includes Studio 53, and Temptation Nigeria, which she presented alongside Ikponmwosa Osakioduwa. Kemi was also a presenter on Soundcity TV and hosted Maltina Dance All for three consecutive seasons.
She never stopped there, she wanted more. Her thirst led her to the New York Film Academy where she learned the nitty gritty of being behind the cameras, and like the classic Kemi Adetiba who never disappoints, she came out with more vigor. Her body of work as a director is spread across the African continent and beyond its borders. She made and produced short films and music videos for artists who saw her talent and skills. One of her music videos, Ekundayo (sang by TY Bello) went ahead to win Best Female Video at the 2009 Soundcity Music Video Awards. Her short film, Across a Bloodied Ocean, was screened at the 2009 Pan African Film Festival and National Black Arts Festival. A very huge feat for a film director at that time.
On 8 September 2016, Kemi Adetiba’s first feature film The Wedding Party (a Nigerian Rom-com film) premiered opening night, at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), as the opening film of the City-to-City Spotlight. Years later, she produced King of Boys and King of Boys: The Return of the King.
Even as a female director, Kemi has been able to stand tall among kings of the industry while working with Legends of the entertainment industry, both in music, film, and many more, the likes of Olamide, Banky W, TY Bello, Tiwa Savage, Niyola, Lindsey Abudei, Wizkid, 2Baba, Da Grin, Waje, Omawunmi among many others.
Her works have received recognition and appreciation within her native land and across the globe. In 2015, she won the Best Music Video Director Of The Year award at the City People Entertainment Award; the HNWOTY Award for Woman of the Year in Film and Television (2017)
