World Blood Donor Day Observed at Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital Sagamu organized by rotaract club Sagamu
In celebration of World Blood Donor Day, the Rotaract Club of Sagamu organized a successful blood donation drive at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) Sagamu. The event, held on June 16th, attracted students from Babcock University South, McPherson University, as well as members of the general public, all eager to contribute to a vital cause and promote health awareness.
The blood donation initiative was part of a broader effort to raise awareness about the importance of voluntary blood donation and its critical role in saving lives. Over the course of the day, numerous donors participated in the event, not only donating blood but also undergoing free health screenings, including blood pressure checks, blood sugar tests, and general health assessments. The event aimed to encourage regular donation habits and foster a culture of altruism among young people and the community at large.
Miss Faith, President of the Rotaract Club Sagamu, delivered an inspiring address emphasizing the benefits of blood donation. She highlighted that donating blood can save multiple lives, reduce the risk of certain diseases, and foster community solidarity. “Blood donation is a simple act that can have a profound impact on someone’s life. It is a gift that keeps on giving, and I urge everyone to consider becoming regular donors,” Miss Faith stated.
The event received significant support from several organizations committed to health promotion. Notably, the 500 Lives Initiative, Gr8 Impact, the Department of Hematology and Blood Transfusion at OOUTH, and other health partners collaborated to ensure the success of the drive. Their combined efforts facilitated efficient blood collection, proper safety protocols, and health screening services, making the event both impactful and safe for participants.
The head of the Department of Hematology and Blood Transfusion at OOUTH, expressed appreciation for the community’s participation. “Blood donation is essential for managing emergencies, surgeries, and treating chronic illnesses. We are grateful to the Rotaract Club Sagamu and all donors for their commitment to saving lives,” he said.
The event underscored the importance of voluntary blood donation, especially in Nigeria where blood shortages often hinder medical care. Organizers hope this initiative will inspire more individuals to donate regularly and help build a sustainable blood supply.
