World Games: NAFA thrilled as Nigeria prepares to represent Africa in Germany

The Nigeria American Football Association (NAFA) has hailed the invitation for Nigeria to represent Africa at the 2026 International Federation of American Football (IFAF) Flag Football World Championships in Düsseldorf, Germany, as a landmark moment for the sport in the country.

 

Describing it as a turning point for flag football in Nigeria, NAFA encouraged Nigerians to celebrate the achievement and support the national team as it prepares for the global competition. The team, according to NAFA, will proudly showcase the talent, resilience, and spirit of Nigeria on the international stage.

 

In a statement, NAFA President Babajide Akeredolu described the development as historic, marking significant progress for the sport, Nigerian athletes, and the country at large.

 

He said: “The Nigeria American Football Association (NAFA) is excited to announce a groundbreaking milestone in the global flag football community. Today, the International Federation of American Football (IFAF), in collaboration with the NFL and the City of Düsseldorf, confirmed that Düsseldorf, Germany, will host the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships from August 13 to 16, 2026.

 

“We are proud to reveal that Nigeria will participate with both men’s and women’s national teams, competing against the world’s top flag football nations. This represents a major leap forward for our sport and a proud moment for our nation.”

 

Akeredolu extended gratitude to the Chairman of the Flag Football Development Board and Minister for Youth Development, Olawande Ayodele; Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko; and Director-General Bukola Olopade for their unwavering support of NAFA’s vision and its mission to empower youth through sports.

 

He also acknowledged key partnerships with NFL Africa, NFL Flag, and Browns Nigeria, whose strategic collaboration and dedication to NAFA’s programs have been vital to the sport’s growth in Nigeria.
