YOWICAN Clarifies Donation of CNG Buses by First Lady as Non-Political, Emphasizes Support for Evangelism and Youth Empowerment
The Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN) has clarified that the donation of seven hybrid CNG 18-seater buses by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu was entirely motivated by support for evangelism, youth empowerment, and community development, and not connected to any political agenda or upcoming elections.
YOWICAN National Chairman, Ambassador Belusochukwu Michael Enwere, addressed attendees during the group’s recent National Convention and the official presentation of the buses at the National Christian Centre in Abuja. The event was attended by Christian leaders and youth representatives from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, with goodwill messages from Archbishop Daniel Okoh of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), represented by General Secretary Apostle (Prof.) Samson Fatokun, and Rev. Ini Ukpuho, National Chaplain of the National Ecumenical Centre.
Enwere emphasized that the donation was a gesture of support aimed at enhancing evangelism and community outreach across Nigeria. “These buses were not donated with any political intent or in connection with elections. Her Excellency made it clear that the purpose is to facilitate gospel outreach and aid our work in various zones, states, and communities,” he stated.
He explained that the seven buses—one designated for the national secretariat and six for zonal offices—would improve mobility and support mission activities for Christian youths nationwide. “The buses are well-maintained within the zonal structures. Each zone will ensure proper use and upkeep. They are cost-effective and easy to operate; for instance, a full CNG fill-up costs about N3,000 to N4,000 and lasts up to seven hours,” Enwere assured.
While applauding the First Lady’s generosity and vision, Enwere also called on government authorities to address the rising violence against Christians in Northern Nigeria. “The ongoing killings of Christians in parts of Northern Nigeria is a serious concern that requires urgent attention. We urge all levels of government to intensify efforts to protect lives and property, bring perpetrators to justice, and ensure that Nigerians can worship freely without fear,” he urged.
He also expressed gratitude to Senator Oluremi Tinubu for her kindness and to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for advocating the adoption of CNG as part of the federal government’s energy transition initiative.
In his keynote address, Enwere described the convention as a rallying point for Christian youths to be beacons of hope amid societal moral challenges. “Our theme, ‘Shine Bright: Reflecting God’s Glory,’ inspired by Matthew 5:16, reminds us that shining bright is a divine calling. In a darkened world, we are called to be vessels of divine light that illuminate paths and draw others to God’s glory,” he said.
He encouraged young Christians to remain steadfast in faith, emphasizing love and forgiveness as central teachings of Jesus Christ. “We must resist the urge for vengeance and live out Christ’s love and forgiveness,” Enwere added.
Representing CAN President Apostle (Prof.) Samson Fatokun, Rev. Ukpuho urged youths to pursue holiness and diligence. “Without holiness, we cannot progress. Holiness paired with hard work is essential; grace must not be misused—if you abuse grace, it will turn against you,” he cautioned.
Rev. Ukpuho also referenced Jeremiah 1:6 and 1 Timothy 4:12, urging young people not to let anyone despise their youth but to set an example through their words, faith, and purity.
The convention concluded with prayers of thanks and the formal handover of the seven hybrid CNG buses to YOWICAN’s national and zonal chapters, symbolizing renewed commitment to their mission.
