The National Economic Council (NEC) has announced that the Federal Government has approved a N5 billion grant for each of the 36 states in Nigeria. This grant is intended to assist in the procurement of grains and provide relief to the high cost of living caused by the removal of fuel subsidies.

In addition to the grant, each state will receive five trucks of rice as palliatives. Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State stated that this is part of the government’s efforts to bring temporary solutions while working on more enduring programs.

During the NEC meeting, it was also decided that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) will distribute food items to states that share borders with Niger Republic. This decision was made in response to the recent political instability in the neighboring country. The council has directed NEMA to provide support and assistance to these states to alleviate any potential food shortages.

Furthermore, the review of the social register is currently underway. Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra state highlighted that Nigeria is already hosting refugees from Niger Republic, which has had an impact on the distribution of resources. The government recognizes the need to address this situation and is working towards finding effective solutions to support those affected.

Overall, these measures aim to provide immediate relief to the citizens and mitigate the impact of subsidy removal on the cost of living. The government remains committed to implementing long-term strategies to ensure sustainable economic stability and improved living conditions for all Nigerians.
