Meet Yeni Anikulapo-Kuti, a remarkable artist and descendant of the renowned Ransome-Kuti family. Born on May 24th, her grandmother was the esteemed Nigerian women’s rights activist, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti. Yeni, also known as YK, has made significant contributions to the world of music and dance.

Although born in England, Yeni Anikulapo-Kuti moved to Nigeria at the age of two and completed her basic and secondary education there. She later pursued a diploma in journalism from the Nigerian Institute of Journalism.

Yeni’s journey in the arts began when she joined her brother Femi’s band as a singer and dancer, after leaving her job as a fashion designer. Currently, she serves as a co-manager of the New Afrika Shrine, a vibrant cultural hub, alongside Femi Kuti.

One of Yeni’s most notable achievements is the creation of Felabration, a music festival dedicated to honoring the legacy and accomplishments of her late father, Fela Kuti. This annual event brings together music lovers from all walks of life to celebrate Fela’s profound impact on Nigerian society.

Yeni Anikulapo-Kuti continues to inspire with her artistic talents and dedication to preserving her father’s musical heritage. Her contributions to the world of dance, music, and cultural celebration are truly remarkable.
