In a surprising turn of events, President Bola Tinubu has suspended Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, from office with immediate effect.

The decision came as the President directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to conduct a thorough investigation into the financial transactions of the ministry and its affiliated agencies. The suspended Minister has been instructed to hand over her duties to the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation and fully cooperate with the investigating authorities.

To ensure a comprehensive reform of the social investment programs, President Tinubu has also established a panel led by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance. This panel aims to conduct a diagnostic assessment of the financial architecture and framework of the programs, with the ultimate goal of eliminating any institutional frailties.

The President’s objective is to rebuild public confidence in these initiatives and ensure that disadvantaged households receive the exclusive benefits they deserve.

This unprecedented move by President Tinubu has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, raising questions about the financial management of the ministry. As the investigation unfolds, Nigerians eagerly await the outcome and hope for transparency and accountability in the utilization of funds meant for poverty alleviation and humanitarian efforts.
