In a major development, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has kickstarted a comprehensive nationwide distribution initiative involving a substantial 42,000 metric tonnes of grains. The approval for this initiative came directly from President Bola Tinubu, signifying a significant move to address the mounting challenges faced by economically vulnerable Nigerians.

Mr. Sule Haruna, the Director of the Food and Strategic Reserve Department (FSRD) within the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, revealed in an exclusive interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, that the grains are currently undergoing meticulous bagging processes. This strategic step ensures the seamless and organized distribution of a diverse range of commodities, including millet, sorghum, maize, and garri, sourced from various silos across the nation.

Clarifying the distribution process, Haruna emphasized that the commencement date remains under the purview of the minister. “If I tell you this is the time or day that the distribution will commence and the minister says otherwise, what then?” he queried, highlighting the dynamic nature of the operation.

While the exact start date is pending confirmation, Haruna assured that the media will be invited to witness the initial phases of this groundbreaking distribution endeavor. The beneficiaries of this initiative extend to ordinary Nigerians residing in all 774 Local Government Areas across the federation.

President Bola Tinubu’s directive on February 8th mandated the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to release a substantial 42,000MT of maize, millet, and other vital commodities from the national strategic reserves. This visionary move seeks to tackle the growing food cost crisis in Nigeria and provide much-needed relief to those grappling with economic hardships.
