Minister Urges Intelligence Agency to Pursue “Agents of Darkness” Advocating Coup Against Tinubu

The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has issued a directive to the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) to investigate and take action against individuals propagating the overthrow of the constitutional government in Nigeria.

Describing them as criminals and enemies of democracy, the minister emphasized the need to bring such individuals to justice. He pointed out that certain elements had circulated viral videos and statements, misleadingly depicting a situation that could encourage military intervention. Matawalle stressed that the military has embraced democratic principles and dismissed the notion of coups as outdated and incompatible with modern realities.

In an official statement titled “Democracy is Working in Nigeria, Warns those Calling for Truncation of Constitutional Government,” the minister condemned those advocating for an undemocratic change of government, particularly targeting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He warned against the allure of coups, asserting that those calling for such actions do not love Nigeria.

Matawalle highlighted the government’s commitment to democracy under Tinubu’s leadership, emphasizing the respect for fundamental human rights and the provision of a level playing ground for citizens to express themselves. The Minister reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ dedication to defending the constitution and upholding democracy, urging Nigerians to support the government’s efforts to advance the nation.
