SSANU and NASU Commence Nationwide Strike, Disrupting University Activities

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) have initiated a nationwide strike today (Monday) over alleged salary disparities and unfair treatment by the Federal Government. The unions had previously threatened to shut down university hostels and power supply if their demands were not met by March 18, 2024.

SSANU’s National President, Muhammed Ibrahim, disclosed that members, including Vice Chancellors, registrars, and bursars, have not received their 2022 arrears. Despite Minister of Education Prof. Tahir Mamman claiming unawareness of the strike, Ibrahim confirmed its commencement during a television programme.

Ibrahim stated, “As of today (Monday), all our workers in registry, bursary, works and maintenance, security, and students’ affairs have withdrawn their services.” He criticized the government’s lack of communication and compliance with President Bola Tinubu’s directive regarding salary payments.

Moreover, Ibrahim highlighted Minister of Labour Nkiruka Onyejeocha’s failure to engage with the unions despite issuing a seven-day notice last Monday. He warned of further actions if the government disregards their demands after the seven-day warning strike.
