2026 Ballon d’Or: Who Will Claim Football’s Biggest Individual Prize.

The organizers of the prestigious Ballon d’Or have announced that their official 30-man shortlist for the 2026 edition will be revealed on September 8. This development has sparked intense discussions among football fans and pundits regarding which players will make the cut, especially given the highly competitive nature of this year’s race.

The 2025/2026 season concluded with the highly anticipated FIFA World Cup held in North America, a tournament that has significantly influenced the current standings and perceptions of player performances. Since the award considers individual excellence alongside team achievements, this World Cup has added an extra layer of excitement and scrutiny to the voting process. The panel responsible for selecting the winner comprises the top 100 FIFA-ranked international journalists, who will evaluate players based on their performances throughout the season and the World Cup.

Ahead of the official shortlist announcement, the top five contenders have emerged based on their remarkable achievements and contributions during the season. At number five is Lionel Messi, whose inclusion highlights the importance placed on the World Cup. The 39-year-old Argentine legend showcased his enduring class, scoring eight goals in the tournament, despite Argentina’s narrow loss to Spain in the final. His performance in MLS and his leadership qualities continue to keep him in the conversation.

Kylian Mbappé, at number four, remains a strong contender. The French superstar, aged 27, shined brightly at the World Cup by winning the Golden Boot and becoming the tournament’s all-time top scorer. His club form also remains impressive, with 42 goals in 44 appearances for Real Madrid, although team silverware has eluded him this season.

In third place is Lamine Yamal, a 19-year-old winger for Barcelona and Spain. Yamal has already made history as the youngest player to feature in and win both a European Championship and a World Cup final. His impressive tally of 24 goals and 18 assists helped Barcelona secure another La Liga title, suggesting he could be a future multiple-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Harry Kane, currently second, has been outstanding for Bayern Munich, netting 61 goals in 51 games and securing the European Golden Shoe. His contributions helped Bayern clinch a domestic double, and although England did not win the World Cup, Kane scored six goals as they finished third.

Leading the race is Rodri, whose dominant midfield presence for Spain during the World Cup earned him the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player. His performance as the defensive maestro and key playmaker for the champions has solidified his status as a top contender for this year’s award.

As the countdown to the shortlist begins, the football world eagerly awaits the final list and the eventual winner of the 2026 Ballon d’Or, with many expecting a fiercely contested race reflecting the exceptional performances across the season and the World Cup.
