2027: Obi presents one-term proposal to Atiku-led coalition

The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement Worldwide, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, announced on Tuesday that Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has submitted his single-term proposal to the opposition coalition for consideration.

Tanko revealed this during the conferment of the chieftaincy title of ‘Sarki Maskan’ (War Hero) on the former Anambra State governor, alongside a commendation letter recognizing his selfless service and dedication to the Pantami community in Gombe.

The former media aide to Obi was also honored with the title of ‘Dan Maje Babba Pantami’ and received a commendation letter signed by the District Head of Pantami Palace, Mai Martaba Abdullahi.

Speaking on the sidelines, the Obidient coordinator expressed optimism that the ongoing coalition would support Obi’s four-year tenure proposal.

Speaking with The press on the sidelines of the ceremony, Tanko confirmed that Obi’s four-year single tenure proposal has formally been submitted to the opposition coalition being championed by opposition figures like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, immediate past governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai and former Senate President David Mark for scrutiny.

“We have presented it to the coalition. It is there for them to make a decision. But we are confident it can work. This is a pronouncement rooted in integrity, and Peter Obi embodies that. What Nigeria needs now are leaders with integrity,” he said.

According to Tanko, the former Anambra State governor does not require more than four years to transform the country and rescue its economy from collapse.

“Obi has said clearly—even though the single term is not in the constitution—that he is committing himself to serve only one tenure. He believes four years is more than enough to accomplish his mission. That shows you how prepared and focused he is.

“Simply stabilizing electricity will resolve many challenges. Under his leadership, Nigeria is promised to become an exporting nation once again, with planes no longer leaving our airports empty,” Tanko said.

Tanko, a former presidential candidate himself, also explained why Obi accepted the traditional title from the Pantami community after years of declining similar honors.

“Obi is not someone who seeks titles, but this one is unique. It comes from a northern community recognizing an Igbo man for his generosity and impact. This speaks volumes about Obi’s growing national acceptance, especially in the North, where he was less popular during the 2023 elections,” he noted.

He added that Obi’s humanitarian work in northern Nigeria—particularly in underserved areas—has begun to change public perception in the region.

“His Excellency has visited places lacking potable water and funded borehole projects. Today in Pantami, there is clean water not only for people but even for animals. Locals now say, ‘Go fetch me water from Peter Obi’s borehole.’ That shows real change.

“He also supports youth entrepreneurship in the North and visits Almajiri schools, helping to build toilets where none existed before. These efforts have earned him strong grassroots support.”

Tanko concluded that the recognition from Pantami reflects Peter Obi’s legacy of bridge-building and signals a possible shift in political dynamics ahead of 2027.
