Federal Workers Express Concerns as January Salaries Remain Unpaid

Federal civil service employees, along with those in ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), are facing growing unrest due to the non-payment of January salaries. The situation is exacerbated by the backlog of N35,000 in wage awards owed to the workers.
The delay in salary disbursement is attributed to the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation’s (OAGF) inability to finalize the 2024 Appropriation on the Government Integrated Financial Management System (GIFMIS) platform. This has hindered the release of the personnel warrant for January 2024, impacting salary payments for both core and non-core civil servants.
Bomoi Muhammed Ibraheem, the General Secretary of the Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU), confirmed the non-payment of salaries to union members. A federal secretariat staff member in Abuja expressed frustration, highlighting the economic challenges faced by civil servants and the impact on their ability to meet financial responsibilities.
In an effort to address the concerns of its staff, the management of the National Mathematical Centre, Abuja, issued an internal memo dated January 31, 2024, titled “Delay in the payment of January 2024 salary,” notifying employees about the expected delay in salary disbursement beyond the normal schedule.
