University of Ibadan Students Protest Electricity Rationing and Tuition Increase
Students at the University of Ibadan have taken to the streets in protest against recent policies implemented by the university administration. The grievances stem from a new schedule limiting electricity supply to 10 hours per day and an increase in tuition fees.
The protest, which began Tuesday evening and continued into Wednesday, saw students gathering at the university gate, wielding placards and voicing their discontent.
In a memo dated July 16, 2024, the Director of the Works and Maintenance Department, O.A Adetolu, instructed a rationed electricity supply from 8 am to 2 pm during the day and from 10 pm to 2 am at night, following approval by the Vice Chancellor. This decision has sparked outrage among the student body, with the President of the Students’ Union, Aweda Bolaji, condemning the move as unjust and outdated.
Bolaji expressed students’ frustrations, stating, “The injustice that has been inflicted on us as students of the University of Ibadan is unacceptable. Rationing electricity in this day and age is regressive.” He further announced plans for a mass protest on July 17, 2024, demanding the immediate reversal of the electricity schedule and the withdrawal of the tuition hike.
“The university must ensure uninterrupted power supply across campus,” Bolaji asserted. “Additionally, all fees must revert to their previous rates, with refunds issued to those who have already paid the increased fees.” He also criticized the alleged victimization of three students involved in a previous peaceful protest and called for an end to such actions.
The demonstration is set to continue early morning on July 17, with union officials mobilizing resources to ensure widespread student participation. The university administration has yet to respond publicly to the escalating student unrest.
