Tragedy Near Orientation Camp: NYSC Denies Involvement, Calls for Justice

A devastating hit-and-run accident claimed the life of Pelumi David Idowu, a student of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, along with his motorcyclist, on Monday last week. The incident occurred in front of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp along the Sagamu-Ikenne Road, sparking widespread outrage and protests.

However, the NYSC has categorically denied any involvement in the tragic incident, refuting allegations that an NYSC official, Ojo Aina, was the driver responsible. The Coordinator of the NYSC in Ogun State, Mrs. Olayinka Nasamu, addressed the media on Wednesday, condemning the unfounded accusations and expressing condolences to the families of the victims.

Furthermore, Nasamu emphasized that the NYSC, as a federal agency, prioritizes justice and the well-being of Nigerian youth. She revealed that investigations conducted by the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police Force have cleared the NYSC of any wrongdoing. “The NYSC is committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring that justice is served,” Nasamu assured.

Moreover, the management of Gateway Polytechnic, including the Rector and Student Union President, have apologized for the wrongful accusations and distanced themselves from the protest staged at the Ogun State Police Headquarters. They have committed to issuing a public rejoinder to correct the damaging story circulating in the media.

In addition, Nasamu clarified that Ojo Aina, the NYSC official accused, was not involved in the incident but had only arrived at the scene to offer assistance. The NYSC is urging the public to disregard the false accusations and awaits the promised public correction from the Polytechnic’s student body.
