Ogun LG closes major markets in honour of late Awujale

The Chairman of Ijebu Ode Local Government, Dare Alebiosu, has announced the temporary closure of three major markets—Ita Ale, Ita Osu, and Oke Aje—effective Monday, July 14, 2025. The decision was made as a mark of respect for the late Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 91 in his GRA residence in Ijebu Ode.

In an official statement, Alebiosu explained that the closure aligns with the cultural traditions of Ijebuland, providing an opportunity for the people to mourn the passing of their revered monarch.

The statement read:

“Following the announcement of the passing of our highly esteemed royal father, His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, CFR, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, Ijebu Ode Local Government has declared the temporary closure of all major markets within its jurisdiction as a sign of honour and deep respect for our departed Kabiyesi.

“Beginning Monday, July 14, 2025, the following markets will remain closed: Ita-Ale Market, Ita-Osu Market, and Oke-Aje Market.

“This directive is in keeping with our cultural values and offers all sons and daughters of Ijebuland the time and space to grieve this monumental loss.

“Market operations will resume on a date that will be announced later, following consultations with the appropriate traditional institutions.

“We appeal to all traders and residents to cooperate respectfully and peacefully. May the soul of our beloved Kabiyesi rest in perfect peace.”
