Ogun Residents Protest Following Fatal Accident That Claimed Four Pupils’ Lives
Angry residents of Sowo Village on Wednesday blocked the Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway in protest over the death of four pupils from Iddo Primary School, Kobape, who were killed in a tragic road accident.
The incident occurred just two days after a motorcyclist and his passenger lost their lives in a separate crash at the Siun junction along the same expressway.
According to eyewitnesses, the latest accident happened around 3 p.m. when a vehicle struck the schoolchildren as they were walking home. In the aftermath, a group of enraged youths reportedly attempted to attack the driver, but he was quickly rescued by security personnel.
Confirming the incident in a telephone conversation with our correspondent on Wednesday, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the accident occurred after a Toyota Corolla with number plate KSF 579 DM rammed into the pupils who were returning from school and killed four on the spot.
According to Akinbiyi, the pupils were taken to the General Hospital, Ijaiye, where they were confirmed dead.
He said, “According to eyewitnesses, four male children of Iddo Primary School, Iddo, Kobape, were walking home from school when a Toyota Corolla that was speeding lost control and rammed into the pupils on the walkway.
The impact of the collision reportedly resulted in the immediate death of the four schoolchildren at the scene. Emergency responders later transported the victims to the General Hospital in Ijaiye for official confirmation, after which their bodies were released to their families for burial.
According to spokesperson Babatunde Akinbiyi, members of the community took to the Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway to protest the tragic loss. However, the situation was quickly brought under control through the joint intervention of security agencies.
“The protest disrupted traffic along the expressway, but with the combined efforts of TRACE, the police, and the Nigerian Army, order was restored,” Akinbiyi said.
In a related incident earlier that week, two people were killed in a multi-vehicle crash at the Siun junction, also along the Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway. Akinbiyi explained that the accident occurred when a truck lost control and collided with several other vehicles.
He identified the vehicles involved as a car with registration number KTU 152 JB, a Mazda bus with plate number LSR 345 YK, a motorcycle bearing KNN 515 VD, and a truck registered as T5582 LA.
