Ogun Government Assumes Custody of Abandoned Two-Day-Old Baby
The Ogun State Government has officially taken custody of a two-day-old baby who was reportedly abandoned at Sayedero Market in Ilaro, located in Yewa South Local Government Area.
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Adijat Adeleye, confirmed the development while addressing the media on Thursday in Abeokuta. She explained that the infant, who is in stable condition, was legally placed under the ministry’s protective care following proper documentation and handover procedures by the Nigeria Police Force.
According to Adeleye, the baby was discovered last week by a woman who promptly reported the matter to the police. However, the situation gained public attention after two viral videos surfaced online in which the woman claimed the baby had mysteriously gone missing after officials from the Ministry of Women Affairs intervened. In the videos, she appealed to the public, urging “well-meaning members of society to help me find the child.”
In response, the commissioner described the woman’s claims as misleading and an attempt to emotionally blackmail the government. Adeleye emphasized that the ministry followed due process in taking custody of the child and accused the woman of deliberately spreading false information to incite public sympathy and discredit the government’s efforts.
“We want to assure the public that the child is safe and in good condition. All necessary legal steps were taken in collaboration with the police before the baby was transferred into our care,” Adeleye stated.
She reiterated the government’s commitment to child protection and welfare, warning individuals against spreading misinformation that could undermine public trust in social services.
