Nigeria, US engage in high-level discussions on easing visa restrictions
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that the United States has not yet lifted the recently imposed visa restrictions on some Nigerian citizens, despite ongoing diplomatic efforts by the Federal Government.
According to the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, “engagements are ongoing, but the policy has not been reversed at this time.”
This suggests that the visa restrictions may remain in effect, as the United States has yet to issue an official response to Nigeria’s request for a review.
Under the revised visa reciprocity policy, the US now limits the validity of certain non-immigrant visas—such as B1/B2 (business and tourism), F (student), and J (exchange visitor) categories—to three months with single-entry access.
The Federal Government, in a statement issued last month, expressed concern over what it described as a disproportionate response by Washington.
It described the move as inconsistent with the principles of equity and reciprocity expected between friendly nations.
The government also warned that the changes could adversely affect legitimate travellers, including students, professionals, and families.
The statement urged the United States to reconsider the sanctions, calling for action rooted in mutual respect and the longstanding bilateral ties between both nations.
While recognizing the US’s sovereign right to determine its immigration policies, the Federal Government expressed concern that the decision could negatively impact cultural and educational exchanges, which have long been a cornerstone of US-Nigeria relations.
