The Police in Abuja have confirmed that Ms. Somtochukwu Maduagwu, a news anchor with Arise News Channel, was killed during a robbery at her home in the Katampe area on Monday.

The head of the Abuja Police Command, Ajao Adewale, called the incident a “cruel and senseless act” and expressed sadness over her death. He also sent his condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and the media community.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the police said that the police chief has ordered a thorough investigation to find out what exactly happened.

The statement said, “The police chief, Ajao Adewale, extends his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Ms. Somtochukwu Maduagwu, who was tragically killed during a robbery at her home in Abuja early Monday morning, September 29, 2025.

He described the attack as “cruel and senseless” and promised that the police are committed to bringing those responsible to justice.

The police chief has also instructed officers to use all available resources to find and arrest the criminals involved.

He urged residents to help with the investigation by sharing useful information and to report any suspicious activity immediately to prevent similar crimes.

This isn’t the first time journalists and media workers in Abuja have been victims of robbery-related violence.

On June 14, 2024, a radio staff member named Azubuko Nwakama was robbed and attacked at Panteka Market in Mpape. After over a year of investigation, the police arrested three suspects in August 2025.

In January 2019, a journalist named Chris Edoga from Radio Nigeria was attacked at his home. Thieves broke in, stabbed him, stole valuables, and he died the next day after being rushed to the hospital.

Also, on September 1, 2019, a journalist working with AIT was killed after being attacked and robbed by a “one-chance” gang, who stabbed him during the incident.
