Ogun Police Rescue Man Impersonating Soldier from Mob
The Ogun State Police Command has announced that its Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) unit successfully rescued a man impersonating a soldier from a mob in the Olomore area of Abeokuta, the state capital.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, on Tuesday.
The rescue was prompted by a distress call intercepted by the command’s Cyber Centre, which reported that a crowd had gathered around a man dressed in full military camouflage, preparing to attack him.
Odutola explained that the swift intervention of SWAT officers prevented a potentially deadly mob attack.
She stated, “The incident followed a distress call intercepted by the command’s Cyber Centre, alerting operatives that a man dressed in full military green camouflage was surrounded by a crowd and on the verge of being lynched.
“SWAT operatives responded quickly to the scene, and upon seeing the officers, the mob dispersed immediately, enabling the safe rescue of the suspect.”
Further investigation revealed that the suspect, identified as Robinson Godday, 31 years old, had allegedly stolen two mobile phones from a local resident before being chased and caught by youths in the area.
Odutola noted, “Open-source intelligence indicated that the suspect snatched two mobile phones from a young man in the vicinity.
“His attempt to escape was thwarted when he was overtaken by a large crowd seeking to administer mob justice.
“He was subsequently assaulted by the irate youths and sustained an injury to his right leg.”
The crowd reportedly returned the stolen phones to their owner before police arrived.
During initial questioning, Robinson Godday admitted that he was not a member of the military. Odutola stated, “The suspect confessed that he was not a military officer and revealed that he stole the uniform from a soldier stationed at Ojo Military Barracks in Lagos, who is currently deployed in the North-East.”
In response, the Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, has ordered increased security checks around the area to prevent similar incidents.
Odutola added that the CP condemned the mob action and has directed more raids and stop-and-search operations in Olomore to curb such occurrences.
The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue, and residents are urged to refrain from taking the law into their own hands, instead handing over suspects to law enforcement authorities.
