FCDA’s Bature Tagwai Highlights the Importance of Innovation and Thoroughness in Architecture.
Bature Tagwai, Director of Public Building at the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), has urged young Nigerian architects to prioritize diligence, thoroughness, and continuous learning as vital components for a successful career. Speaking in Abuja, he emphasized that architecture is a demanding profession requiring relentless effort and meticulous attention to detail.
Tagwai advised young professionals to embrace self-driven education and stay informed about global trends in architecture. He highlighted that the field demands personal commitment and a proactive approach to knowledge acquisition. “Architecture does not condone laziness. You have to be prompt, decisive, and diligent in every design situation,” he stated. He also underscored the importance of staying updated with innovations in building materials and techniques, citing examples from Dubai and China, which exemplify modern architectural advancements.
He emphasized that architects should actively seek to upgrade their skills and knowledge through continuous self-education. According to Tagwai, success in architecture depends on the opportunities one seizes and the capacity to adapt to evolving global standards.
Having recently been conferred as a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (FNIA), Tagwai shared insights into his career, which began in 1992 with the FCDA. He rose through the ranks to become Deputy Director before his recent appointment as Director of Public Building, appointed by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
Reflecting on working under Wike, Tagwai described it as a “special privilege,” praising the minister’s dedication to transforming Abuja’s landscape. He credited Wike with creating an environment that fosters economic activities and motivates professionals across disciplines, resulting in a visibly transformed city within just a few years.
Tagwai called for unity, collaboration, and partnership among professionals, emphasizing that “a tree cannot make a forest,” advocating collective effort for national development.
