Nigerian rapper Jeremiah Chukwuebuka Ani, popularly known as Jeriq, has credited music with saving him from a life of crime and potential imprisonment. In an open interview with YouTuber The Smallie, Jeriq revealed that he has been arrested multiple times by law enforcement agencies due to various vices.
The Enugu-born artist explained that his involvement in criminal activities led to several encounters with the police and anti-cult units. He shared that these experiences left scars on his body from handcuffs, illustrating the severity of his past troubles. However, he expressed gratitude that music became a positive distraction, helping him stay away from further vices and legal issues.
“Thank God for music. If not for music, I would probably be in prison by now,” Jeriq stated. His words reflect how vital music has been in redirecting his life toward a more constructive path.
Jeriq also recounted the struggles he faced when he first moved to Lagos to pursue his music career. During his initial attempt, he lacked the exposure and opportunities to connect with established artists. “When I first came to Lagos, I wasn’t popping yet, so I didn’t have chances to collaborate with anyone because I was still upcoming,” he said.
However, his fortunes changed after returning to Lagos in 2021. That year marked a turning point when he collaborated with renowned artist Dremo on an EP titled ‘East and West,’ which gained him more recognition.
Looking ahead, Jeriq expressed confidence in his potential to achieve international fame, especially by rapping in his native Igbo language. His journey underscores how music transformed his life from one marred by vices and legal issues to a promising career in the entertainment industry.
