Fusengbuwa Ruling House Sues Abiodun, Kingmakers Over Awujale Succession
The Fusengbuwa Ruling House of Ijebu-Ode has filed a suit at the Ogun State High Court, Ijebu-Ode Judicial Division, seeking an order compelling the completion of the process for selecting the next Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland.
The suit, numbered HCJ/149/2026 and dated August 21, 2026, was filed by the Chairman of the ruling house, Otunba Abdulateef Adebayo Owoyemi; Deputy Chairman, Otunba Adedokun Ajidagba; and Vice Chairman, Prof. Chief Fassy Yusuf.
The defendants include Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Oluwasina Ogungbade (SAN), the Ogun State Executive Council, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs Ganiyu Hamzat, the Secretary of Ijebu-Ode Local Government, and members of the Awujale Afobaje/Kingmakers Council.
The ruling house is asking the court to determine the legal responsibilities of the relevant authorities and kingmakers in the Awujale succession process. It is also seeking orders that would enable the selection process to proceed to completion in accordance with the applicable chieftaincy law.
The Awujale stool became vacant following the death of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona on July 13, 2025. The latest court action adds a legal dimension to the ongoing process of selecting his successor.
