Tinubu Orders Urgent Repairs as Benin-Agbor-Asaba Gridlock Worsens

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Federal Ministry of Works to urgently intervene in the worsening condition of the Benin-Agbor-Asaba road corridor, where motorists and commuters have faced severe traffic congestion.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed the directive on Tuesday, saying the ministry had commenced immediate measures to restore movement and ease the hardship experienced by road users.

Umahi travelled to Benin, Edo State, alongside members of the National Assembly Works Committees to coordinate the intervention and engage relevant stakeholders, including representatives of the Edo and Delta State governments and the Niger Delta Development Commission.

The development follows days of worsening gridlock along the corridor, which has disrupted the movement of passengers and goods between Edo and Delta states. Residents and motorists had also protested over the condition of the Benin-Agbor Bypass on August 20.

Umahi said the Federal Government would take immediate corrective measures while working towards longer-term solutions to the problems affecting the highway.

The minister also expressed concern over the hardship faced by motorists and commuters, with reports indicating that some travellers have spent several hours, and in some cases days, on the affected routes.

The Federal Government’s intervention is aimed at restoring traffic flow and addressing the road conditions responsible for the prolonged congestion along the strategic Benin-Agbor-Asaba corridor.
