The Zamfara State Community Protection Guards, also known as Askarawan Zamfara, have made significant arrests targeting criminal elements involved in banditry and related activities across the state. In a recent operation, nine suspects were paraded in Gusau, including bandits, informants, logistics providers, drug traffickers, and an individual accused of impersonating a lawyer.
The arrests were the result of intelligence-driven operations carried out in various parts of Zamfara. The commandant of the Guards, retired Assistant Inspector General Shehu Dalijan, disclosed this to journalists during the parade. He revealed that the suspects were apprehended based on information gathered from individuals operating within different criminal camps.
One of the notable arrests was that of 20-year-old Abubakar Malan Ori, who confessed to having spent several months in the camp of a notorious bandit leader, Kachalla Gwaska. Ori further disclosed that he participated in criminal activities across Zamfara, Kaduna, Niger States, and even in the Niger Republic. He revealed that over N226 million had been collected as ransom from various kidnapping operations he was involved in.
Two other suspects, Mamman Haruna and Aliyu Lawali, reportedly provided crucial information about their involvement in cattle rustling and coordinated attacks alongside other well-known bandit leaders. Their confessions are expected to aid ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks in the region.
Among those arrested was Ibrahim Mafindi Titus, identified as a “bandit doctor.” He is accused of providing medical treatment to injured members of criminal groups, using supplies obtained from outside Nigeria. His role highlights the sophisticated logistics supporting banditry in the area.
The parade also included other suspects such as alleged informants, logistics suppliers, and drug dealers. One individual, Mustapha Muhammed, was accused of impersonating a lawyer and collecting money from the family of a detainee outside the Community Protection Guards’ headquarters, further illustrating the diverse criminal activities being targeted.
The recent crackdown signifies a renewed effort by Zamfara authorities to combat rising insecurity and criminality. The security forces continue to intensify their operations, aiming to dismantle the criminal syndicates disrupting peace in the region. The arrests mark a crucial step toward restoring security and stability in Zamfara State.
