From Dependency to Recovery: Man’s Journey of Overcoming Substance Abuse.

From Dependency to Recovery: Man’s Journey of Overcoming Substance Abuse.

A former drug addict, Abraham, has opened up about how his addiction severely impacted his life over a decade, costing him his job, damaging family relationships, and leaving lasting physical scars. His story was featured on NDLEA TV’s YouTube series, NarcoTales, highlighting the devastating effects of substance dependence and the journey to recovery.

Abraham revealed that he first became addicted in his mid-20s, a period when he sought escape from life’s pressures. Over the years, his addiction spiraled out of control, affecting every aspect of his life. The turning point came when he lost his job at an oil company due to his offensive body odor, which was a direct result of his drug use. His colleagues had to constantly open windows, turn on the air conditioning, and spray air freshener whenever he entered the office. Despite his efforts, he couldn’t hold down the job for long and was eventually put on sick leave.

This job loss made Abraham realize the severity of his situation. He admitted that he was no longer feeling the initial pain that led him to start using drugs but was now acting purely on impulse and craving. His dependence affected his finances, health, and relationships. His parents, especially his mother, tried to help him, but the strain was too much, resulting in his parents’ separation. His relationship with his siblings also deteriorated, with Abraham describing his bond with them as now feeling distant and strained.

The addiction took a heavy physical toll as well. Abraham sustained scars from years of needle injections, which left him with difficulty walking and a sense of partial disability. He expressed regret over the lost opportunities—such as stable employment and the chance to have a family—that he missed because of his addiction. He also recounted engaging in extreme behaviors like stealing from his mother and begging strangers for money to buy drugs, even attempting suicide three times.

His path to recovery was aided by support from his church community and professional help. Abraham’s first rehabilitation attempt lasted only a month, but he relapsed soon after. His subsequent rehab process was more successful because of the ongoing support from his pastor, church members, and mental health professionals. He also took up skills like wig-making to help rebuild his life.

Today, Abraham advocates against drug abuse, speaking to students and the public about his experiences. He urges those battling addiction to acknowledge their problem, seek help, and speak out, emphasizing that it’s never too late to quit. His story underscores the importance of support and resilience in overcoming addiction’s destructive grip.
