Tinubu: Ogun Deep Seaport to Ease Pressure on Lagos Port Corridor
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu says the proposed Gateway Deep Seaport in Ogun Waterside is expected to help ease congestion along the Lagos port corridor and reduce logistics costs and delays for businesses.
Tinubu spoke in Paris on Thursday during the signing of Memoranda of Understanding between the Ogun State Government and DP World for the development of the Gateway Deep Seaport and the Ogun State Blue Marine Special Economic Zone.
According to the Presidency, the proposed seaport will have a four-kilometre berth and an 18-metre draft, allowing it to accommodate larger, deeper-draft vessels. The facility is intended to complement existing ports in Lagos, including Apapa and Tin Can Island, by providing additional maritime capacity.
The President said the project, alongside the proposed 10,000-hectare Blue Marine Special Economic Zone, would strengthen Nigeria’s maritime, manufacturing and export capacity.
The agreements are expected to attract more than $7 billion in initial investment, with over 50,000 direct jobs projected when the projects are fully developed. These figures remain projections tied to the implementation and development of the projects.
The signing marks a significant step in Ogun State’s long-standing plans to develop a deep seaport, although the Gateway Deep Seaport remains at the development stage and is not yet operational.
The Federal Government has pledged support for the infrastructure and regulatory framework required to move the project from agreements to implementation.
