Activist Lawyer Calls for External Investigation into EFCC Bribery Allegations

A bribery allegation involving Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has sparked controversy.

This comes barely days after social media influencer Martins Vincent Otse, aka VeryDarkMan, released an audio recording of Bobrisky claiming that he bribed EFCC officials with N15 million to drop money laundering charges. Bobrisky also alleged that his godfather ensured he didn’t serve his six-month sentence in Kirikiri prison.

In response, activist lawyer Madubuachi Idam has urged the National Security Adviser (NSA) and the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate the allegation. Idam emphasized that the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, cannot investigate the commission, as it would be a conflict of interest. He stated that the NSA and DSS must champion the investigation to ensure transparency and accountability.

The EFCC has already invited Bobrisky and VeryDarkMan for questioning. Idam stressed that the Lagos State Sectional Head of the EFCC and the Officer in Charge of Kirikiri Correctional Center must clear their names to regain public trust.

It’s worth noting that Bobrisky was previously convicted of mutilating Naira notes and was arraigned on a four-count charge bordering on the offense. The EFCC Establishment Act empowers the commission to combat economic and financial crimes, including money laundering.
