Socio-political activist Aisha Yesufu has expressed concern over the makeup of the newly launched African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, urging its leadership to ensure genuine inclusion of women and young people in decision-making positions.
Yesufu, a vocal supporter of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, made the appeal in a post shared on her X handle on Wednesday.
“Dear ADC Coalition, women and youth leader roles should not be the only positions allocated to women and young people,” she wrote. “A table dominated by older men cannot be the sole platform for making decisions moving forward.”
“Women and youths must be in the midst of decision-making and not as afterthought in the form of tokenism,” Yesufu wrote.
She encouraged active participation from young Nigerians and women, stressing the importance of numbers and fresh ideas.
“Dear women and youths, this is the time for the numbers.
“You must make your voices heard—loud and clear. Get involved! Step into leadership roles!
Be delegates, be active members on the floor.
Make a positive impact! Contribute bold, unconventional ideas,” she urged.
Her remarks came in response to the official launch of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the new platform for an opposition coalition aiming to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s administration in the 2027 elections.
The event, held on Wednesday at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, saw former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola announced as interim National Chairman and Secretary of the ADC-led coalition, respectively.
ADC’s founding National Chairman, Ralph Nwosu, stated that party leaders voluntarily stepped down to allow the new leadership to take the reins and chart a fresh course for the party.
