The Nigeria Women’s U-20 team, the Falconets, was eliminated from the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup on Sunday after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia in their quarter-final match held in Lodz, Poland. The match was intense and closely contested, with the decisive goal coming in the second minute of stoppage time, scored by Valerin Loboa, securing Colombia’s spot in the semi-finals.

Throughout the game, Nigeria had several scoring opportunities but was unable to convert them into goals. In the 19th minute, Janet Akekoromowei nearly opened the scoring with a powerful shot from the edge of the box, but her effort struck the crossbar and went out. Later, in the 38th minute, Tumininu Adeshina also came close, with Colombia’s goalkeeper Luisa Agudelo pushing her low shot over the bar, denying Nigeria an early lead.

The Falconets showed resilience and attacking intent after the break, with players like Tosin Rafiu, Akekoromowei, and Onyedikachi Ekezie pushing forward to threaten the Colombian defense. However, their efforts were dampened in the 77th minute when Kafayat Mafisere received a straight red card for a foul on Colombian player Samantha Rodriguez, reducing Nigeria to ten players for the remaining minutes of the match. Despite being a player down, Nigeria fiercely defended and frustrated Colombia, who sought to run down the clock by playing cautiously and seeking counter-attacks.

The match’s turning point came in added time when Loboa, alert to a through ball, took her chance. Her initial shot was saved by Nigeria’s captain and goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma, but Loboa scored on the rebound, sealing Colombia’s victory and their place in the semi-finals.

The Nigerian team’s effort was commendable, and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Acting General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme praised the players for their dedication. “You gave your best out there, and the NFF and every Nigerian watching saw that you held nothing back,” he stated. Despite the loss, he emphasized that Nigeria created enough chances to win and urged the team to remain motivated.

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Poland, Chioma Ohakim, also lauded the Falcons for their resilience and tenacity throughout the tournament. Although they are out of the competition, the team’s performance has garnered respect and admiration, and their efforts are seen as a testament to Nigeria’s growing talent in women’s football.
