FG, Governors Call for Press Freedom, Media Independence

On World Press Freedom Day 2025, government officials and stakeholders strongly advocated for a free and independent media, crucial for democracy and accountability. The theme, “Reporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media,” brought AI’s influence to the forefront. Minister of Information Mohammed Idris stated, “A free and responsible media is the lifeblood of any democratic society — it gives citizens the power to express themselves freely and hold leaders accountable.” He added that the government would “ensure that innovation does not come at the cost of ethics, press freedom, or national security.” Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo highlighted that “A free and independent press fosters democracy, accountability, and societal progress,” and recognized the press’s role in “amplifying the voices of the people, scrutinising government policies, and contributing to constructive dialogues.” Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Yahaya lauded journalists for their “commitment to truth, transparency, and public enlightenment,” describing them as “indispensable partners in the democratic process.” He cautioned against AI’s risks, including “misinformation, fake news, and threats to the safety of journalists.” The International Press Centre also urged stakeholders to defend the right to truthful information.
