Herder Attacks claim 30 lives Across Ondo, Benue, Nasarawa, and Edo States

Deadly attacks by suspected armed herders have sparked widespread outrage and protests in several communities across Ondo, Benue, Nasarawa, and Edo states. The attacks have resulted in the deaths of at least 30 people, with many more injured or abducted.

In Ondo State, nine surveyors were kidnapped, and two residents were abducted, with four others suffering gun and machete wounds. The attacks in Ondo’s Akure North Local Government Area left a trail of destruction and bloodshed, with authorities recovering at least 14 bodies.

Benue State has also been affected, with violent protests erupting in Naka, headquarters of Gwer West Local Government, after three members of the state’s Civil Protection Guards were ambushed and killed by suspected herders. The protests led to the torching of the palace of the local traditional ruler and parts of the local government secretariat.

In Nasarawa State, a communal clash in the Farin Dutse community escalated into a full-blown crisis, leaving at least seven people dead, including a pregnant woman. The conflict began as a dispute between local farmers and herders, with houses, shops, and vehicles set ablaze.

The police have arrested two suspects in connection with the violence in Nasarawa, and the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer has announced that the command’s “covert operation” will be intensified to flush out criminals.
